Lycos

Anyone remember Lycos? The search engine? The first search engine to go public, before Yahoo and the rest?

They're still around, as are their properties Angelfire and Tripod. Remember those? They're still active.

I used to use lycos on occasion long long ago, but favoured alta-vista.

Those other web site authoring/publishing schemes never interested me in the slightest.

Yeah, I was an Alta Vista person, too. Secondarily I used a search engine based in Spain called Magellan. Occasionally using Lycos, WebCrawler, AskJeeves. I avoided Yahoo because I didn't like the idea of human curated results, which was their thing.

What about Bigfoot? I still know my Bigfoot password 😆

I'd love to. But I am annoyed that these petitions are also opting in to email that I then have to later stop.

Hmm. I just skipped the email box and scrolled down to the button at the bottom.

@Phil Landmeier (ᚠ) Interesting. I'm surprised it worked, as it appeared to be a mandatory entry.

Oh heavens, I wouldn't want the military co-opted for political purposes. Perish the thought.

Why your DnD character wouldn't actually be riding down the road in Heavy Armor ;)

Have tried, can confirm. Mail armor at least lets air pass through, but the underlying padding is where all the insulation lives.

@smellsofbikes cool! I mean, not cool, but the fact you've had that experience is cool. I've yet to experience actual armor. Fuck, I need to get on with experiencing interesting things.... fucking pandemic... sorry, got distracted.

I used to make armor. Mail in particular is much easier to make than you'd think, if you have a hacksaw, a vise, and some pliers. Plate armor is more difficult, particularly since you need an anvil and some specialty hammers. But it's still easier than, say, leather armor.

Police officers in major cities know what they're going to be asked to do at work if they're called in right now. Continuing to show up and get paid is complicity, no matter how good or unracist they feel in their heart.

"Good cops" need to quit now, there's no ambiguity. If there are as many people in the police force that are dedicated to peace and justice as we're always told there are, a mass exodus of them would make these violent police attacks impossible.

Very happy to see that Friendica finally imported my Mastodon follows! :)

On the lighter side, this is a cool video about how to put on plate mail, and the functions of the pieces. I like D&D, and fantasy movies, so this vid is great.

Armor first choices:
- Gambeson. Easy and fast to produce, easy and fast to get armored up and remove, not so bad against cinetic weapons (arrows and blades), replace the sheep wool with kevlar and it stop bullets
Anyway, take one: you can wear it under your main armor
- Ring armour, the same with chunks of steel inside. It's like a chainmail without the "shoulder burden" and the piercing vulnerability
- Brigandine, a reverse ring armor. Better than steel between fabric and leather, leather between steel slides. almost as good as a plate armor, but low cost, easier to wear and repair, and the gambeson is till an option

The plate armour is impressive, but it's a luxury accessory. It costs a lot, you can't wear it withour help, you can walk and ride a horse but not run and standing up is too slow in a battle, and the heat... A german emperor probably died cause armor overheat or armor swimming penalty

Better choose a "weaker" armor and a good shield: a shield can block arrows and blades, a soft armor let you move - if you avoid 50% of the hit, the armor will "eat" the 50% lasting

...me furiously adding notes for her next D&D game...

Life imitating art - in "Night Watch" a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett, Commander Vimes orders his watchmen to NOT shutter the watchhouse doors, to NOT wear their armor or swords, but to instead stand out there and look like decent blokes, and behave like decent people, and his is the ONLY watchhouse in the city to not get sacked and burned. Hm.

Look at the US cities today - where the Chief of Police and cops meet the protesters on the streets like human beings, instead of showing up armed, or teargassing the protesters - you don't get the same riots, burning cars, smashed windows, or - oh, this is the best part - stories about cops arresting black journalists and black congressional representatives.

Life imitating art. Almost as if Pratchett had an incredible handle on human behavior.

I don't remember that, and am adding Night Watch to my list to re-read.
As for Sir Pratchett, he did indeed have an incredible handle on human behavior.
I'm currently revisiting books in the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. She's another one with quality character development. If you like sci-fi, I recommend her to you.

Quote of note:

"Just months after the Ferguson unrest, President Obama set up his Task Force on 21st Century Policing. It recommended the implementation of training and policies that 'emphasize de-escalation'. It also called on police to employ tactics during protests 'designed to minimize the appearance of a military operation and avoid using provocative tactics and equipment that undermine civilian trust'.”

"By the evidence of the last few days, a number of police departments have failed to heed the message."

Via Militarization has fostered a policing culture that sets up protesters as ‘the enemy’

Last Day to Vote - please vote!

A beautiful short film by a filmmaker I know. Everyone can vote daily! :-)
As a favor to me, would you vote for her? (It's not her bestest work, she could really the boost right now, because, you know, the best artists are insecure as fuck.)

Here's a better example of her work.

Trump Begins His New Civil War With Flash-Bangs and a Photo Op

Último artigo da série de @manolo_ssa sobre o governo Bolsonaro.

Trumps designates Antifa a terrorist group - can't someone DO something.

Now that Trump has designated that an Anti Facist group are terrorists, (as opposed to the KKK) is it not possible to impeach him out of office ASAP, the damage this is doing to the USA and it's people as a nation is increasing on a daily basis.

If someone does not act, he will declare the election fake when he loses even if he loses by a massive margin, and take over as supreme leader.

I have friends in the US from here and other platforms, well people I communicate with. Starting to really worry about the direction the country is going.

Take care and be safe all of you.

so far there has been very little coverage of how the UK politicians are reacting to this
theyre all worthless. im a huge anglophile and lived in the uk, nonetheless im boycotting them (im boycotting the eu and looked forward to buying stuff from the uk again, which is not the same as not understanding the problems caused by brexit) but im still boycotting the uk because of assange. im aware that trump played a role there.

but thats just it, isnt it? both governments are corrupt and murdering innocent people. so even if they said something, it would be hypocritical. im not against them making a comment condemning this, but they are doing the same thing to assange.

when assange dies, i will never buy pg tips or birds custard again. i boycott the bbc and the guardian. this is just the stuff i plan to boycott permanently, it is not necessarily the only things i will boycott.

shows the UK is just as bad in some ways.
awful, isnt it? of course i still like british people. i like chinese people too-- awful government.

not an anarchist but it really seems like the governments of the world are on a crusade to prove how incredibly illegitimate they are. and how much they really just dont give a fuck at all. not an anarchist, but fuck tyranny.
