What I dislike about the federation

I have been noticing since a while there is a very impolite attitude among many people who use the federated networks, the lacking of desire to build a community that include all the other ones from all the different countries and languages.

Many times I see posts that starting in English which is the most common ground to communicate among the others that end filled up in any others languages than English, along the fact that is unkindly and annoying, it goes in the opposite way of the inclusion which should be the reason why a social network exists.

It is true that Mastodon resolved it brilliantly but in Diaspora and Friendica you can't exclude topics because the language that means is up to the users take the task to avoid cross languages in any topic.

However I see there isn't any desire to avoid that behavior and people are quite careless about that, hence I think I will start to ignore all the people that do not respect this very simple, unwritten and basic rule.

#languages #diaspora #friendica #fediverse #federation #people #respect #inclusion
#languages #diaspora #friendica #fediverse #federation #people #respect #inclusion diaspora federation fediverse friendica languages people

hoergen on Friendica doesn't like this.

there is much room for many innovations in the interface to help encourage more of that community spirit, n discourage the obnoxious trolling behavior, methinks.

i've yet to get the skills/knowledge to hack up such possibilities myself yet. but i see the potential. the fediverse in its infancy, much to grow into better yet. :) and not just many new improvements, but many existing technologies to be tied in (translation for one).

The pointlessness of the FSF endorsed distros based on Ubuntu...

A pure Free-Software distro is a very hard ambition as well as an hard goal to accomplish, you have to deal with your hardware and if your hardware is not compliance with the free Software it is almost impossible running a pure libre distro. But back to time when even installing a standard distro was an impossible task, Ubuntu came out helping a lot of people making easier installing linux on whatever hardware. However we have to flip the point of observation, at the beginning there were just free drivers mostly made through reverse engineering, most of them were too buggy or unreliables, and the few closed drivers were hard to obtain or unavailable to the end users. Hence running a linux distro and having a laptop or a PC with 100% hardware recognized was very hard to achieve but not for Ubuntu. Ubuntu made easy installing blob binaries on Linux and making your hardware properly working, cool! All of we are in debt with Canonical for this because Ubuntu broken this barrier and helped all the distro to achieve the same, pointing the direction to follow. The main point is Ubuntu used... show more

Carrying water for software owners is a compromise. Debian hosting non free software is a waste of resources that should go to making better free software. Allowing someone to set up a tent to install non free software outside of a FSF event, as long as the person dresses up as a devil, is not such a compromise, it's just another way of telling people that non free software gives an evil third party control of your computer. I think that Debian did a better job of shielding users from non free software than Ubuntu did, but they can do better still by dropping it all on the floor.

of course it is a compromise. it is just an acceptable compromise. but it is a compromise. if it werent, then “as long as the person dresses up as a devil” would be irrelevant. the “deal” and the “compromise” are practically the same thing. “if you dress like this and stay out of the room, you can be part of our event whereas you werent before.” you might as well say that as long as you put a big warning on cigarettes, it isnt a compromise to allow them to be sold instead of banned. (im not against the move from the fsf, but its a very silly argument that it isnt a compromise.)

Switching the contact type

Hi there,

how can I change a contact from #Friend to #Subscriber and vice-versa?

#help #friendica #contacts
#Friend #Subscriber #help #friendica #contacts contacts friendica help

I haven't seen that in the Help anywhere, but you could note their network name, Drop them, then Add them again. I'm still new to Friendica, though, so don't take this as gospel.

Eventually I got how to do it...

First: you go to contact icon on top (it depends by your theme) and it opens a list of your contacts

Second: each contact as a row of small icons you have to press the one with the tooltip that says "view contact".

Third: on the status' contact there is a button with a label "disconnect/unfollow", when it says that it means you are friends each others, when it says "connect/follow" it means the contact is "a fan of your". While disconnecting from a friend is invisible for the other reconvert it in a friend activates a notification to that contact.
