Linux Revenge

You could have made a dual boot machine.
Keeping Windows for just in case.

At the beginning my wife wouldn't Linux installed on this laptop, she said that we are surrounded by Linux computers at home, but eventually she agreed for a dual boot with Linux after the catastrophic experience with a kid and W10.

Another Weird Issues with Debian Sid

Another weird issue with # Sid, misconfiguration and kernel panic a gogo; two hours to fix the issues downgrading to testing through chroot...

I gave up with Unstable, for everyday use Testing is way more reliable, and I am not enough expert to handle with these stuff...

This is not a Debian fault it is just me though, but it is great you can fix with a Debian live cd!

# # # # # #

So. You found out, that Unstable is less stable than Testing.

My take: you are a f***ing genius! May I have a tattoo with your avatar?

Are you dumb or a dumb bot? Get out of here...

Flatpak and Tray Icons

Hi Folks,

does anyone know if # supports system tray icons?

I am currently testing the flatpak # application but it doesn't shows any tray icon not even in the preferences that is available as option, but reading on internet it may be activated with these options: --use-tray-icon --start-in-tray

However when I run:

flatpak run org.signal.Signal --use-tray-icon --start-in-tray

The icon in the tray isn't displayed.

My system is # Testing with # as # environment, what do you think?

My best,

D.

# # # # # # #

By the way I installed Zoom through Flatpak and it is has the tray icon... But I didn't know that Gnome 3 doesn't support tray icon hence I had to install the nineteenth extensions... 🤦‍♂️

Pro Audio Equipment for Linux

Hi There,

my brother because, the coronavirus, needs to give his lectures in video
conference.

I suggest to him to buy some professional equipment, there a tons of Linux podcasters that maybe can suggest me hardware equipment and software.

Regarding the software I thoughts he might use #, not sure the application or the server. He needs also to record his classes and I am not sure if Discord already does it or if he needs also # installed.

We are a # based family I would need hardware recommendations that works 100% out of the box on Debian, sometimes hardware that target # work fine also in Debian, but better being sure.

He need to speaks with the students and to share the desktop and to record everything, if you think there is a better software solution please let me know.

In the meantime thanks in advance for your support!

@">Anadam :-D, thanks for those information, meanwhile I took a look at the equipment used by @DasGeek and it is pretty expensive... 😱

Yeah, one doesn't need brand new gear nor needs to spend a bundle.

Since # became # I saw a very radical, and ambiguous, approach to certain topics that I would suggest to rename the show # or #.

I don't know if this is a mere coincidence, but this shift is quite evident.

If you want proprietary software on a *nix base for all, just begin to pressure # to release # for any hardware so you can have all the proprietary software you want on any hardware. Or just switch to Win10 and WLS, then you have # + # + proprietary software without dual boot, practically yours dreams are already materialized.

If your idea of the # is bringing all the proprietary crap, with all the lockdowns against # that implicitly means, then I am pretty happy that we will never have the #.

You should promote # because along donations and contributions these software exist also because people use those, if you promote the proprietary software against the floss one you are simply incoherents.

Totally agreed, and I am also against the misconception that commercial software bring people to use the alternative free version. It doesn't work on Win and Mac why it should work on Linux is a mistery, it is just propaganda the make people more prone to accept closed software on a GPLed environment.

Regarding commercial vs. open software. Yes agree. People use what they know and what they know is often what they used in school and at work. The other issue of course... everyone that uses closed stuff thinks you should be compatible with them rather than they being compatible with you... not fair... but the way it usually is. For example, I have a Facebook account which I don't use that much but need because if I want to communicate with my extended family... I have to because that's what they use and nothing is likely to change that. There are a lot of examples of this sort of thing.

On the other hand I've also had great success using Linux and open applications which I've been doing both at home and work since about 1997 or so in various ways. My wife uses Linux too, her dad uses linux, my mom uses Windows but open apps. So people do use and succeed with going open in various ways.

I'll ask the same to #, thanks!

Hey Daniel, I think something got stuck with the worker process and it hasn't been running appropriately for a few days (!). After restarting some bits & pieces, it appears there's quite a backlog, could take it hours to sort out, but it appears to be running again. Please do let me know if the posts never show up, maybe there's a separate issue going on.

@Adam Clark

Yes, eventually they showed up! Thanks for taking care of this!

A petition to free Cycas CAD

There was this # software that always captured my attention but I haven't tried though. And although the website seems still updated the last version available is from the far 2008.

From the screenshot it seems build natively for Linux with the X11 libraries, it would be nice asking to owners if they are willing to open code. They could be also crowdfund the code as did by Blender.

Do you believe it is worth making an attempt with an online petition?

Playing around with EndeavourOS

I have been following # from episode 70. I am not a supporter but it is one of the podcast I listen weekly. And I have noticed, as many other similar podcast, that for them the deb based distro end with *buntu. And even if they did, on episode 72, an interview with Chris Lamb of # their approach hasn't change very much, and without Rocco probably has got even worst.

Now dear friends let me tell you an obviously that without Debian probably Ubuntu would never exist and let me also say that once you try Debian you never come back to Ubuntu. But the way you treat Debian and related project like # clearly show that you haven't done well your homework and for that still continue to speak just of *buntus.

I suggest you to try Debian in depth to understand well the project wholly not only on the technological part. I mean the approximations and commonplaces I heard constantly about the Debian project are quite unjustifiable.

Let me finish pointing out that your main sponsor uses Debian for its infrastructure...

Thanks

Not trying to diminish Debian at all, but I work for System76 and we use Ubuntu as the base for Pop!_OS. Ubuntu has packaged drivers for devices like NVIDIA cards that are not easy, especially for the average user, to install.
I love what the Debian project stands for, but it cannot always keep up with the demands of modern computers/users

The latest version of # (1.1.0) from # got a tremendous enhancement!

Better UI, better settings, modern look! Started as a simple fork of # now it is one of the best # # Client available for #.

Warmly recommended if you are looking for a # app for your mobile, I installed it from #.

Virtual Distro Hopping

Give a try to Sabayon, Calculate or Gentoo before settling with Debian. You may get surprised.

I am not even sure if Sabayon is still active as project, however I don't see the point to use Gentoo on a Virtual Machine with limited resources...

Would have liked to read about your experiences with Obarun. It is arch based and I used it only on bare metal. Install is pretty simple.

Look at this:

https://lizards.opensuse.org/2019/10/09/opensuse-wsl-images-in-obs/

At a certain point M$ has to stop selling licenses for developing because Devs can get tired of this behave when have plenty of LinuxOS for free and M$ doesn't want go against the devs like did in the 80's, 90's and at the beginning of the 2000. The only solution is an Open Source stack on top of sort kind of wrap around WSL toward exclusively Azure...

RMS survived this wave of smear (second wave), now we need to see who runs the FSF

SVG support in GIMP

Dear @GIMP

I am not sure if this is the most appropriate space but I have a question.

#SVG support in #GIMP would be a really nice feature in terms of vector clipping mask and vector shapes on Canvas rather than with Gfig. I was wondering if hasn't been included for technical reason, or because considered useless, or something else...

Just curiosity...

Thanks

#gimp #floss #foss #opensource

Well, GIMP is a bitmap drawing program (raster), designed to handle arrays of pixels, while SVG is a vector format, a set of drawing primitives. Those are much different ways of drawing. If you want to edit SVG you really want to look at a vector drawing program like Inkscape instead.

Why vector layers would be useful in GIMP it is explained here.

Since the moment SVG is an open standard I just though that is natural implementing that on GIMP, however I am totally fine any other solution that can achieve the same result.

RMS did not fail!

How do I get which application is open for screens rather than for desktop?

Hi folks,

I am trying to figure out how to get which applications are open on a specific screen on a multi-monitor configuration on #Linux.

For example utility like #wmctrl ignores the condition of the two monitors and considers the desktop area just as larger (1920*2)*1080px.

Thanks!

Just a wild guess, would pstree show you an entry of screen and the applications listed beneath it?

I have to test it out... but thanks anyway...

The hidden issues of Devuan

Hi there,

I am using Devuan Testing as daily driver on a Virtual Machine every day as main desktop for almost everything and I am a bit concerned about something that might become a real issue.

For its entire cycle and even when Debian Buster was released at every update I have been having this output:

The following packages have been kept back:
  elogind libelogind0 libpam-elogind

These three packages that are fundamentals for Devuan haven't received an updated for at least one year, this is not really the best practice to make an operative system safe. This three packages are a vulnerability and make Devuan a distro unsafe to use on any scenario.

I hope they are doing to make something to improve the security of Devuan keeping these three packages updated and safes.

Trackers

Hi folks,

I am preparing a new article about tracking because another article I found the previous weak, however I don't find any official documentation about the search settings and use of #Tracker on #Gnome3.

It says:

Publish to the fediverse

Reach outside your own site with federation via ActivityPub. WriteFreely lets anyone on Mastodon, Pleroma, or any ActivityPub-enabled service follow your blog, bookmark your posts, and share them with their followers. See how it works.

Not sure how it works though, but there is a video...

@Daniel looks like it works like RSS - one can subscribe to WF blogs so their postings will appear in the feed and can be bookmarked, reshared and discussed with other contacts - but again no interactivity with the author.

Although I suppose if the author wants it they can subscribe to their own blog and then reshare postings from it :)

Gnu question of the day

The #gnuquestionoftheday is:

Why do we have a tons of non-linear editing systems available on #Gnu & #Linux and just a bunch of image editing applications?

The count:

1. #Openshot
2. #Shotcut
3. #Flowblade
4. #Kdenlive
5. #Pitivi
6. #Kino

And just:

1. #Gimp
2. #Krita
3. #MtPaint ... 😅

Is it easier create a nle rather than an image manipulation software?

As a matter of fact we have also more raw image processors:

1. #ufraw
2. #rawtherapee
3. #lightzone
4. #Darktable

and if we add also photo organizers at the same list:

5. #Shotweel
6. #Fotoxx
7. #Digikam
8. #Hugin
9. #Shotwell

That is pretty weird isn't it? 😁
