Virtual Distro Hopping

Hi there,

I have been using #Devuan on #Virtualbox for while when I decided to change distro because Devuan is stuck in the transition of #Xfce4 to the newer version.

Hence I decided to to some (virtual) #distrohopping, to find a replacement, mainly #rollingdistro but I started with #Fedora.

With Fedora the installation was fine just a small issue to make the shared folders working. But afterward I decided to move on rolling system and I selected #... show more

Of course you can deactivate unneeded daemons from Devuan also, and/or install slim. The kernels are about the same as Debian's.

Probably it is faster because I selected a kernel image tailored for the system rather than one wider with more hardware support...

Give a try to Sabayon, Calculate or Gentoo before settling with Debian. You may get surprised.

I am not even sure if Sabayon is still active as project, however I don't see the point to use Gentoo on a Virtual Machine with limited resources...

Look at this:

https://lizards.opensuse.org/2019/10/09/opensuse-wsl-images-in-obs/

At a certain point M$ has to stop selling licenses for developing because Devs can get tired of this behave when have plenty of LinuxOS for free and M$ doesn't want go against the devs like did in the 80's, 90's and at the beginning of the 2000. The only solution is an Open Source stack on top of sort kind of wrap around WSL toward exclusively Azure...

RMS survived this wave of smear (second wave), now we need to see who runs the FSF

SVG support in GIMP

Dear @GIMP

I am not sure if this is the most appropriate space but I have a question.

#SVG support in #GIMP would be a really nice feature in terms of vector clipping mask and vector shapes on Canvas rather than with Gfig. I was wondering if hasn't been included for technical reason, or because considered useless, or something else...

Just curiosity...

Thanks

#gimp #floss #foss #opensource

Well, GIMP is a bitmap drawing program (raster), designed to handle arrays of pixels, while SVG is a vector format, a set of drawing primitives. Those are much different ways of drawing. If you want to edit SVG you really want to look at a vector drawing program like Inkscape instead.

Why vector layers would be useful in GIMP it is explained here.

Since the moment SVG is an open standard I just though that is natural implementing that on GIMP, however I am totally fine any other solution that can achieve the same result.

RMS did not fail!

Dear @JoeRessington of #LateNightLinux I heard your episode 73 and I can't allow some comments you did.

Let me also say to you that you speak about #Linux, #opensource and #freesoftware but you don't have even a federated/fediverse account, for the sake of what you profess it would be nice having you here for a real confrontation.

You stated that #RMS failed on all the fields he challenged, but this a lie as well as a misconception. Without RMS we would not have #GNU, the #GPL and con... show more

Alias in Fish Shell

Hi Fish Shell users,

I have a question, I am trying to create a config file where I stored all my recurrent actions however it doesn't work. I don't understand why, the only hypothesis I have is that you have to create each command separated which will be pretty annoying.

How do I get which application is open for screens rather than for desktop?

Hi folks,

I am trying to figure out how to get which applications are open on a specific screen on a multi-monitor configuration on #Linux.

For example utility like #wmctrl ignores the condition of the two monitors and considers the desktop area just as larger (1920*2)*1080px.

Thanks!

#opensource #gnu #debian #ubuntu #xfce4 #linuxdesktop

Just a wild guess, would pstree show you an entry of screen and the applications listed beneath it?

I have to test it out... but thanks anyway...

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a decent laptop, to buy in Europe (Italy), that plays nicely with Linux, any brands; gpu: Intel or AMD. Thanks!

Eventually I decided for a Lenovo Thinkpad t40 which is sold in some country with Ubuntu, or at least is Ubuntu certified, I won't install Ubuntu but Debian but I think to get the hardware working without enough struggling. By the way it is impossible to get Ubuntu from Lenovo.

Why did I chose it? Cause I am not buying it directly but through an institution and I cannot use some exotic seller but only accredited sellers, and Lenovo is one of them...

If you want to through getting TUXEDO accredited, just let us know.
Otherwise: have fun with the T40, it's a good choice!

I already spoke with the purchase office, no way they will do that, they told me that clearly unfortunately.

Gah, too bad. But thanks for trying!

I know, it is a shame... :(

The hidden issues of Devuan

Hi there,

I am using Devuan Testing as daily driver on a Virtual Machine every day as main desktop for almost everything and I am a bit concerned about something that might become a real issue.

For its entire cycle and even when Debian Buster was released at every update I have been having this output:

The following packages have been kept back:
  elogind libelogind0 libpam-elogind

These three packages that are fundamentals for Devuan haven't received an updated for at least one year, this is not really the best practice to make an operative system safe. This three packages are a vulnerability and make Devuan a distro unsafe to use on any scenario.

I hope they are doing to make something to improve the security of Devuan keeping these three packages updated and safes.

Infity war

This is a cyclic topic however I can't find a proper answer for this but:

If #ColdFusion is so damn better than #PHP why does almost no one use it?

https://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/programming_language/all

I read a lot of very enthusiastic comparisons on how good is #CF and eventually I can't avoid to think that most of those are paid (by Adobe) reviews...

If a thing is better and and help you to make your work faster doesn't matter if it is expensive. It has also available an open source alternative. Facebook doesn't use coldfusion but a modified PHP, not even Adobe uses ColdFusion:

Trackers

Hi folks,

I am preparing a new article about tracking because another article I found the previous weak, however I don't find any official documentation about the search settings and use of #Tracker on #Gnome3.

I am speaking about this:

Is anyone of you able to land me to any official documentation?

Thanks in advance!

Personal Blog...

Hi Guys,

I would like to open a blog speaking about my personal misadventure with my Computer...

I would like to use a platform which is open, free and gratis... I found that Frama Site has already all these feature but I would like to ask if you know also other services like that one.

Thanks in advance!

It says:

Publish to the fediverse

Reach outside your own site with federation via ActivityPub. WriteFreely lets anyone on Mastodon, Pleroma, or any ActivityPub-enabled service follow your blog, bookmark your posts, and share them with their followers. See how it works.

Not sure how it works though, but there is a video...

@Daniel looks like it works like RSS - one can subscribe to WF blogs so their postings will appear in the feed and can be bookmarked, reshared and discussed with other contacts - but again no interactivity with the author.

Although I suppose if the author wants it they can subscribe to their own blog and then reshare postings from it :)

Gnu question of the day

The #gnuquestionoftheday is:

Why do we have a tons of non-linear editing systems available on #Gnu & #Linux and just a bunch of image editing applications?

The count:

1. #Openshot
2. #Shotcut
3. #Flowblade
4. #Kdenlive
5. #Pitivi
6. #Kino

And just:

1. #Gimp
2. #Krita
3. #MtPaint ... 😅

Is it easier create a nle rather than an image manipulation software?

As a matter of fact we have also more raw image processors:

1. #ufraw
2. #rawtherapee
3. #lightzone
4. #Darktable

and if we add also photo organizers at the same list:

5. #Shotweel
6. #Fotoxx
7. #Digikam
8. #Hugin
9. #Shotwell

That is pretty weird isn't it? 😁

Distro personal crisys (an open letter to myself... )

tl;dr I think this is something that happens from time to time but I think I need to change distro for a while. And I just realized this long post is for me, because I have to deal with my ideals and I am not really happy to do that, but I am not having fun with Debian recently and I need to solve it.

After ten years of #Debian I see Debian changing in something that I don't recognize or I don't feel comfortable with it. Many years ago Debian was also synonymous of innovations, on every fields, today what happens in Debian is, along to slow, behind the scene, like the Risc-V port but for the Desktop area there is nothing exciting and since the #systemd debate I had the feelings that Debian simply refused to lead in favor on just following the events. I mean I am really prone to think if tomorrow Ubuntu is shipped with Just snaps that Debian will follow the same, honestly... show more

@Daniel you should post this question to the Friendica help forum, which can be done by mentioning !Friendica Support, there is many people that can help you.

Also try to do a refresh of the page by "CTRL-F5", also try another browser to see if the problem is the same then.

Thank you for your advice, I'll try it edit my thread!

@Daniel not sure if editing works in case of mentions, this kind of mention with the ! Instead of @ will cause a special distribution, better make a new post and use the exclamation mark instead of the @

You were totally right, but it seems I had to wait to be accepted in the forum...

@Daniel I thought that is automatic.

@Steffen K9 🐰 isn't the contact request approved automatically? Can someone post to the forum without being a contact?

Misadventure in GUIX #2

Last time I tried GuixSD, I was unable to install it on Virtual Box, but with the latest build I was able to install it as any other distro...

This is already a big success and then I tried to explore a bit how it works... The main goal for now is to install the "guest addition" in order to have better performance on the VM.

The first limit I found is the documentation, actually I always have been finding the Linux man pages uneasy to understand, somehow cryptic, with improbably examples. Anyway, First thing I tried to understand if there were collections that can help to get all the packages I needed for the build from source but I didn't find any. I found some packages that download with them a lot of others packages, so basically I had should be ready.

Then I inserted the virtual cd but there wasn't any virtual cd. I checked the setting of the DE, I installed XFCE4, and everything was already properly set up then I thought maybe was a matter of permits and groups. Actually I wasn't in cdrom group so I tried to add my user but there wasn't the package, then I... show more

Thank you very much for mentoring me, actually I was unable to find or create the configuration system file.

So until I don't understand how where it is or how to create it, I'll be likely unable to achieve anything.

Just another question but if gdm is not installed but just "linked" to my profile how can I remove it? Manually?

Thanks... 🍺

If you used the graphical installer, the system declaration file is probably /mnt/etc/config.scm.

I'm not sure to understand your question, however. "installed" really means "associated to your profile" so GDM cannot be "associated" but not "installed".
