Debian freezing

So boring when Debian is stuck on the freezing cycle... 😩

#debian #linux #freesoftware #foss #floss #frozen
#debian #linux #freesoftware #foss #floss #frozen Debian Linux

François Revol reshared this.

@Fernando Santagata During freeze even sid slows down significantly. You need to go for experimental for the extra kick.

@Debacle

Yep, that's true indeed... No remedies... 😩

WTF?

Sorry to reshare this in English, however let me say who care about Gnome and the third parties and their stupid war to gain control over the end-users...

It is not a novelty the only theme that works with the GTK3 is Adwaita, for the Gnome people you must use their DE like they want and if you are in disagreed you are just an ignorant dumb; but it doesn't make sense why a DE want control the software you use so in depth, starting from systemd. And the third parties aren't different, who cares about your identity? Release your brand assets as GPL and you resolve all your issues... Want monetize your effort? Cool, put your application on android or ios, and keep off your mask.

Continues with this shit and you will kill free software definitely...

Jackd is designed for extreme low latency under heavy load with a multitude of different streams from several applications. That sounds good for any purpose but on the other hand it also means, that audio is the main task for the machine, when jack hugs the soundcard. And that it demands every second of CPU power to make sure, audio buffers are processed in less then 10 Milliseconds if needed. So: the battery of laptops go down significantly faster if Jackd is running and the fans are howling if more than just modest processing is required.
That was the reason why Ubuntu ditched jack as a possible all purpose audio daemon back in 2007 or so...
Pulse never had that realtime ambition, it was designed to just deliver audiostreams for VOIP and videos in the browser where latencies of 100 ms are no big problem....

Interesting and enlightening comment @Hartmut Noack , thanks!

Fork it, trim it and maintain it.

@freemedia what is implied with the 'refracta' details and distro link? I'm not being facetious, I'm honestly confused... it is very late though, and I need sleep, so please forgive me if I'm just being slow, haha

Devuan Testing with runit

For reason that I will not explain I use a lot Linux inside a virtual machine. I have been using for a long time the Raspberry PI Desktop because supposedly extremely light, but I got tired.

Hence I decided to install another Debian derivative and just because I am a huge fan of #systemd I installed #Devuan testing plus #runit as init system and let me say that, even if I also encrypted the virtual disk, the distro runs like a charm and it is somehow faster than Raspberry PI with systemd, the boot is faster and generally the DE is quite performing. I always thought that Xfce has been always superior than Lxde, so it was not a surprise that feelings I am having.

Also the use of Slim instead of Lightdm makes the distro faster after the login, as a matter of fact lightdm is another bottleneck. The sensation is the OS is more responsive even because runit, which just works as an init...

I'll keep you posted about Devuan and runit!

System76 firmware update

Since my first (and unique) System76 laptop purchase I have never had a kind word for this company. I have been always complaining about their policy to support just Ubuntu... However it seems they did some steps toward to non Ubuntu or Pop_os users, in fact I was able to update the firmware just with a usb iso (pop_os!) in demo mode and everything worked totally fine as described in their documentation.

At least for one time System76 were been able to let me say something positive about you! 🍻

I have to repost it because who read this from Mastodon can't read my comment made from Diaspora...

The main issue is manufacturers want tight their os with their hardware. It happens the same with PureOS, it is a very close derivates of Debian but doesn't work exactly as Debian, it is designed to work with their hardware. Fine, it makes sense from the manufacturers perspective but not for a end-user point. The main difference between Purism and System76 is the former contributes back in upstream to Debian so everyone can take advantage of it, even System76.

Ubuntu from my point of view is a unbalanced distro that takes care more of perspective end users rather than power users, while Pop_os, that is an Ubuntu derivative, is awfully bonded with systemd. Please stay far away both from me.

I am likely prone to buy another System76 hardware if they would start selling those with RedoxOS as primary OS rather than whatever *buntu and derivatives.

By the way from my point of view those companies that sell Linux computers are making an HUGE error when
... show more

I totally disagree. Probably more than 95% of sold computers are made to work on one OS, either Windows or MaOS in case of Apple. Linux being OpenSource can and have found compatibility with most hardware, but that's mostly because of it's open nature and don't forget... The Linux Foundation that works on the kernel is funded by those same companies like Microsoft, IBM, etc. Then it comes a company that somehow made it almost mainstream but still small, to be out their way and sell computers focused on providing Linux for the masses. They are small but dedicated, still managed to created their own OS to provide maximum compatibility with their own hardware. But somehow many feel entitled to ask for more? HP does not provide drivers for my HP laptop nor I have the ability to update the BIOS because I erased Windows. Guess who's gonna trouble shoot? hint, Not HP. The same with Apple. and yet you have the nerve to ask System76 or any other Linux selling provider for that matter to support more than they can handle or should business wise.
The same with other Softwar... show more

Fine, so we have to separate all this matter in computers/laptops that are Linux friendly and the ones that are Ubuntu friendly, in this scenario I select the former ones... So it means that Ubuntu friendly != Linux friendly, this companies must be more clear to avoid confusion on their customers.

@Ismael J HP does provide drivers... some are just straight from hardware vendors, but others are are modified by HP specifically for their machines. And they tend to do this for all the recent and in-use variants of Windows OS. I think that's what we expect from vendors for Linux. How would you feel if HP only gave you drivers for Windows 8 32bit home-edition version that came pre-installed... you cannot get it to work at all with windows 10, Windows 8 Pro, or even older Windows 7 if you hate windows 8. This would be unacceptable, no?

Linux is not a bunch of different OSes (for the most part) it's just different distros, and just like Windows versions, usually the drivers only require minor changes and to be packaged a little differently (for, say, Debian and Fedora) - not totally rewritten or anything like that.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect that a manufacturer selling a 'Linux computer' should provide drivers packaged for the handful of major distros - much lik... show more

GNU Guix 1.0 System Distribution & Transactional Package Manager Released

GNU Guix 1.0.0 released — 2019 — Blog — GNU Guix

https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/blog/2019/gnu-guix-1.0.0-released/

This distro is so cool, I look forward to make it my main distro.
There are a tons of points that make this distro so thrilling but two are actually my favorites:
  • systemd free. GuixSD uses the Shepherd init system, formerly knwon as DMD (Daemon managing Daemons), it uses daemons to initialize and run services.
  • Nix package manager that allows different versions of a same applications, rolls back, sandboxes, applications per users.
It runs only Free Software so you need an hardware 100% compatible with FreeSoftware.

What I dislike about the federation

I have been noticing since a while there is a very impolite attitude among many people who use the federated networks, the lacking of desire to build a community that include all the other ones from all the different countries and languages.

Many times I see posts that starting in English which is the most common ground to communicate among the others that end filled up in any others languages than English, along the fact that is unkindly and annoying, it goes in the opposite way of the inclusion which should be the reason why a social network exists.

It is true that Mastodon resolved it brilliantly but in Diaspora and Friendica you can't exclude topics because the language that means is up to the users take the task to avoid cross languages in any topic.

However I see there isn't any desire to avoid that behavior and people are quite careless about that, hence I think I will start to ignore all the people that do not respect this very simple, unwritten and basic rule.

#languages #diaspora #friendica #fediverse #federation #people #respect #inclusion
#languages #diaspora #friendica #fediverse #federation #people #respect #inclusion diaspora federation fediverse friendica languages people

hoergen on Friendica doesn't like this.

there is much room for many innovations in the interface to help encourage more of that community spirit, n discourage the obnoxious trolling behavior, methinks.

i've yet to get the skills/knowledge to hack up such possibilities myself yet. but i see the potential. the fediverse in its infancy, much to grow into better yet. :) and not just many new improvements, but many existing technologies to be tied in (translation for one).

The pointlessness of the FSF endorsed distros based on Ubuntu...

A pure Free-Software distro is a very hard ambition as well as an hard goal to accomplish, you have to deal with your hardware and if your hardware is not compliance with the free Software it is almost impossible running a pure libre distro. But back to time when even installing a standard distro was an impossible task, Ubuntu came out helping a lot of people making easier installing linux on whatever hardware. However we have to flip the point of observation, at the beginning there were just free drivers mostly made through reverse engineering, most of them were too buggy or unreliables, and the few closed drivers were hard to obtain or unavailable to the end users. Hence running a linux distro and having a laptop or a PC with 100% hardware recognized was very hard to achieve but not for Ubuntu. Ubuntu made easy installing blob binaries on Linux and making your hardware properly working, cool! All of we are in debt with Canonical for this because Ubuntu broken this barrier and helped all the distro to achieve the same, pointing the direction to follow. The main point is Ubuntu used... show more

Carrying water for software owners is a compromise. Debian hosting non free software is a waste of resources that should go to making better free software. Allowing someone to set up a tent to install non free software outside of a FSF event, as long as the person dresses up as a devil, is not such a compromise, it's just another way of telling people that non free software gives an evil third party control of your computer. I think that Debian did a better job of shielding users from non free software than Ubuntu did, but they can do better still by dropping it all on the floor.

#specialpleading #splittinghairs

of course it is a compromise. it is just an acceptable compromise. but it is a compromise. if it werent, then “as long as the person dresses up as a devil” would be irrelevant. the “deal” and the “compromise” are practically the same thing. “if you dress like this and stay out of the room, you can be part of our event whereas you werent before.” you might as well say that as long as you put a big warning on cigarettes, it isnt a compromise to allow them to be sold instead of banned. (im not against the move from the fsf, but its a very silly argument that it isnt a compromise.)

Switching the contact type

Hi there,

how can I change a contact from #Friend to #Subscriber and vice-versa?

Thanks!

#help #friendica #contacts
#Friend #Subscriber #help #friendica #contacts contacts friendica help

I haven't seen that in the Help anywhere, but you could note their network name, Drop them, then Add them again. I'm still new to Friendica, though, so don't take this as gospel.

Eventually I got how to do it...

First: you go to contact icon on top (it depends by your theme) and it opens a list of your contacts

Second: each contact as a row of small icons you have to press the one with the tooltip that says "view contact".

Third: on the status' contact there is a button with a label "disconnect/unfollow", when it says that it means you are friends each others, when it says "connect/follow" it means the contact is "a fan of your". While disconnecting from a friend is invisible for the other reconvert it in a friend activates a notification to that contact.

The pleasure of using Mozilla Thunderbird again

Hi guys,

I am in the process to move everything from my old gmeil account to my brand new mailbox.org account.

Mailbox has a very nice webui however it lacks of some features respect gmeil and it is not fast as the gugl service. It doesn't mean that is not good, but it can't still compete with gmeil at the same level. Thus while with gmeil I stopped to use any desktop client as I used to do, because mostly useless, with Mailbox I started to use Mozilla Thunderbird again.

I have completely forgot about the pleasure of use an email client, In first place it has been very useful to move all the emails I needed from gmeil to mailbox seamlessly, pretty cool indeed; but then I started to use all the cool features that Thunderbird has.

For example Mailbox still not support labels while Thunderbird can use tags, so I was able to organize all my emails very quickly in I way I like. Another aspect is checking the email with Thunderbird is faster than with the Mailbox webmail, and now at home I am using just Thunderbird, while at work, since the moment I don't need... show more

De-guglification a personal step forward

Well guys,

eventually I decided to use Mailbox.org as my personal email and moving far away from gmail as soon as possible.

I used as reference this guide: https://www.fsf.org/resources/webmail-systems
and I almost checked out all of those but not the one with weird names, I would like to use my new email also for work and then I needed something that is easy to pronounce in English, Spanish and Italian.

At the very beginning I started with Posteo.org, very cute but the old UI/UX drove me crazy, I also tried it for a while with Thunderbird but the lacking of a modern desktop client (bugs-free) eventually made change my mind (and my money).

Probably ProtonMail is the best one, but even if you can have a free account when you start to want more space the price gets high very quickly while Mailbox has a good balance between features, price and UI/UX. I am pretty satisfied indeed.

I have just started, probably I will need a bit of adaptation but I am pretty confident I will be quickly productive and my old gmail account will be converted in my garbage email, cool!

Why is Friendica bloated by tons of trackers?

I noticed that Friendica has a tons of trackers, mine are disabled by my browser extensions, however Diaspora has 0 trackers.

It is something related with my Friendica server or it something that belongs to Friendica itself?

I am pretty confused... 🤔

@daniel01 That's odd I don't see that. But why don't you ask the admin Adam Clark (kinetix@social.isurf.ca). I believe he's a good guy.
