Improving the adoption of XFCE toward developers

Since # became # I saw a very radical, and ambiguous, approach to certain topics that I would suggest to rename the show # or #.

I don't know if this is a mere coincidence, but this shift is quite evident.

If you want proprietary software on a *nix base for all, just begin to pressure # to release # for any hardware so you can have all the proprietary software you want on any hardware. Or just switch to Win10 and WLS, then you have # + # + proprietary software without dual boot, practically yours dreams are already materialized.

If your idea of the # is bringing all the proprietary crap, with all the lockdowns against # that implicitly means, then I am pretty happy that we will never have the #.

You should promote # because along donations and contributions these software exist also because people use those, if you promote the proprietary software against the floss one you are simply incoherents.

Totally agreed, and I am also against the misconception that commercial software bring people to use the alternative free version. It doesn't work on Win and Mac why it should work on Linux is a mistery, it is just propaganda the make people more prone to accept closed software on a GPLed environment.

Regarding commercial vs. open software. Yes agree. People use what they know and what they know is often what they used in school and at work. The other issue of course... everyone that uses closed stuff thinks you should be compatible with them rather than they being compatible with you... not fair... but the way it usually is. For example, I have a Facebook account which I don't use that much but need because if I want to communicate with my extended family... I have to because that's what they use and nothing is likely to change that. There are a lot of examples of this sort of thing.

On the other hand I've also had great success using Linux and open applications which I've been doing both at home and work since about 1997 or so in various ways. My wife uses Linux too, her dad uses linux, my mom uses Windows but open apps. So people do use and succeed with going open in various ways.

A petition to free Cycas CAD

There was this # software that always captured my attention but I haven't tried though. And although the website seems still updated the last version available is from the far 2008.

From the screenshot it seems build natively for Linux with the X11 libraries, it would be nice asking to owners if they are willing to open code. They could be also crowdfund the code as did by Blender.

Do you believe it is worth making an attempt with an online petition?

It is very depressing how it is difficult reaching out the Linux community with the Federation/Fediverse... 😟

How do I get which application is open for screens rather than for desktop?

Hi folks,

I am trying to figure out how to get which applications are open on a specific screen on a multi-monitor configuration on #Linux.

For example utility like #wmctrl ignores the condition of the two monitors and considers the desktop area just as larger (1920*2)*1080px.

Thanks!

Just a wild guess, would pstree show you an entry of screen and the applications listed beneath it?

I have to test it out... but thanks anyway...

I would like to open a blog speaking about my personal misadventure with my Computer...

I would like to use a platform which is open, free and gratis... I found that Frama Site has already all these feature but I would like to ask if you know also other services like that one.

Thanks in advance!

It says:

Publish to the fediverse

Reach outside your own site with federation via ActivityPub. WriteFreely lets anyone on Mastodon, Pleroma, or any ActivityPub-enabled service follow your blog, bookmark your posts, and share them with their followers. See how it works.

Not sure how it works though, but there is a video...

@Daniel looks like it works like RSS - one can subscribe to WF blogs so their postings will appear in the feed and can be bookmarked, reshared and discussed with other contacts - but again no interactivity with the author.

Although I suppose if the author wants it they can subscribe to their own blog and then reshare postings from it :)

Distro personal crisys (an open letter to myself... )

@Debacle Honestly I haven't understood yet the difference between the two but I think they work almost the same... 😅

@Debacle

Thanks for sharing that video, it was very interesting.

Misadventure in GUIX #2

Thank you very much for mentoring me, actually I was unable to find or create the configuration system file.

So until I don't understand how where it is or how to create it, I'll be likely unable to achieve anything.

Just another question but if gdm is not installed but just "linked" to my profile how can I remove it? Manually?

Thanks... 🍺

If you used the graphical installer, the system declaration file is probably /mnt/etc/config.scm.

I'm not sure to understand your question, however. "installed" really means "associated to your profile" so GDM cannot be "associated" but not "installed".
