Virtual Distro Hopping

Hi there,

I have been using #Devuan on #Virtualbox for while when I decided to change distro because Devuan is stuck in the transition of #Xfce4 to the newer version.

Hence I decided to to some (virtual) #distrohopping, to find a replacement, mainly #rollingdistro but I started with #Fedora.

With Fedora the installation was fine just a small issue to make the shared folders working. But afterward I decided to move on rolling system and I selected #... show more

Give a try to Sabayon, Calculate or Gentoo before settling with Debian. You may get surprised.

I am not even sure if Sabayon is still active as project, however I don't see the point to use Gentoo on a Virtual Machine with limited resources...

Would have liked to read about your experiences with Obarun. It is arch based and I used it only on bare metal. Install is pretty simple.

SVG support in GIMP

Dear @GIMP

I am not sure if this is the most appropriate space but I have a question.

#SVG support in #GIMP would be a really nice feature in terms of vector clipping mask and vector shapes on Canvas rather than with Gfig. I was wondering if hasn't been included for technical reason, or because considered useless, or something else...

Just curiosity...

Thanks

#gimp #floss #foss #opensource

Well, GIMP is a bitmap drawing program (raster), designed to handle arrays of pixels, while SVG is a vector format, a set of drawing primitives. Those are much different ways of drawing. If you want to edit SVG you really want to look at a vector drawing program like Inkscape instead.

Why vector layers would be useful in GIMP it is explained here.

Since the moment SVG is an open standard I just though that is natural implementing that on GIMP, however I am totally fine any other solution that can achieve the same result.

Trackers

Hi folks,

I am preparing a new article about tracking because another article I found the previous weak, however I don't find any official documentation about the search settings and use of #Tracker on #Gnome3.

I am speaking about this:
https://feborg.es/settings-new-search-panel/

Is anyone of you able to land me to any official documentation?

Thanks in advance!

Personal Blog...

Hi Guys,

I would like to open a blog speaking about my personal misadventure with my Computer...

I would like to use a platform which is open, free and gratis... I found that Frama Site has already all these feature but I would like to ask if you know also other services like that one.

Thanks in advance!

It says:

Publish to the fediverse

Reach outside your own site with federation via ActivityPub. WriteFreely lets anyone on Mastodon, Pleroma, or any ActivityPub-enabled service follow your blog, bookmark your posts, and share them with their followers. See how it works.

Not sure how it works though, but there is a video...

@Daniel looks like it works like RSS - one can subscribe to WF blogs so their postings will appear in the feed and can be bookmarked, reshared and discussed with other contacts - but again no interactivity with the author.

Although I suppose if the author wants it they can subscribe to their own blog and then reshare postings from it :)

Gnu question of the day

The #gnuquestionoftheday is:

Why do we have a tons of non-linear editing systems available on #Gnu & #Linux and just a bunch of image editing applications?

The count:

1. #Openshot
2. #Shotcut
3. #Flowblade
4. #Kdenlive
5. #Pitivi
6. #Kino

And just:

1. #Gimp
2. #Krita
3. #MtPaint ... 😅

Is it easier create a nle rather than an image manipulation software?

As a matter of fact we have also more raw image processors:

1. #ufraw
2. #rawtherapee
3. #lightzone
4. #Darktable

and if we add also photo organizers at the same list:

5. #Shotweel
6. #Fotoxx
7. #Digikam
8. #Hugin
9. #Shotwell

That is pretty weird isn't it? 😁

p.s. better the #linuxquestionoftheday? 🤔

Pinta I think is not anymore in developing and Java software aren't never considered for definition... And about Hugin, I have been a little bit elastic...

Distro personal crisys (an open letter to myself... )

tl;dr I think this is something that happens from time to time but I think I need to change distro for a while. And I just realized this long post is for me, because I have to deal with my ideals and I am not really happy to do that, but I am not having fun with Debian recently and I need to solve it.

After ten years of #Debian I see Debian changing in something that I don't recognize or I don't feel comfortable with it. Many years ago Debian was also synonymous of innovations, on every fields, today what happens in Debian is, along to slow, behind the scene, like the Risc-V port but for the Desktop area there is nothing exciting and since the #systemd debate I had the feelings that Debian simply refused to lead in favor on just following the events. I mean I am really prone to think if tomorrow Ubuntu is shipped with Just snaps that Debian will follow the same, honestly... show more

Gimp 2.10.12 released

That's cool! 👍

Recently Gimp is going very well! 😀

Misadventure in GUIX #2

Last time I tried GuixSD, I was unable to install it on Virtual Box, but with the latest build I was able to install it as any other distro...

This is already a big success and then I tried to explore a bit how it works... The main goal for now is to install the "guest addition" in order to have better performance on the VM.

The first limit I found is the documentation, actually I always have been finding the Linux man pages uneasy to understand, somehow cryptic, with improbably examples. Anyway, First thing I tried to understand if there were collections that can help to get all the packages I needed for the build from source but I didn't find any. I found some packages that download with them a lot of others packages, so basically I had should be ready.

Then I inserted the virtual cd but there wasn't any virtual cd. I checked the setting of the DE, I installed XFCE4, and everything was already properly set up then I thought maybe was a matter of permits and groups. Actually I wasn't in cdrom group so I tried to add my user but there wasn't the package, then I... show more

Thank you very much for mentoring me, actually I was unable to find or create the configuration system file.

So until I don't understand how where it is or how to create it, I'll be likely unable to achieve anything.

Just another question but if gdm is not installed but just "linked" to my profile how can I remove it? Manually?

Thanks... 🍺

If you used the graphical installer, the system declaration file is probably /mnt/etc/config.scm.

I'm not sure to understand your question, however. "installed" really means "associated to your profile" so GDM cannot be "associated" but not "installed".

Devuan Testing with runit

For reason that I will not explain I use a lot Linux inside a virtual machine. I have been using for a long time the Raspberry PI Desktop because supposedly extremely light, but I got tired.

Hence I decided to install another Debian derivative and just because I am a huge fan of #systemd I installed #Devuan testing plus #runit as init system and let me say that, even if I also encrypted the virtual disk, the distro runs like a charm and it is somehow faster than Raspberry PI with systemd, the boot is faster and generally the DE is quite performing. I always thought that Xfce has been always superior than Lxde, so it was not a surprise that feelings I am having.

Also the use of Slim instead of Lightdm makes the distro faster after the login, as a matter of fact lightdm is another bottleneck. The sensation is the OS is more responsive even because runit, which just works as an init...

I'll keep you posted about Devuan and runit!

GNU Guix 1.0 System Distribution & Transactional Package Manager Released

GNU Guix 1.0.0 released — 2019 — Blog — GNU Guix

https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/blog/2019/gnu-guix-1.0.0-released/

This distro is so cool, I look forward to make it my main distro.
There are a tons of points that make this distro so thrilling but two are actually my favorites:
  • systemd free. GuixSD uses the Shepherd init system, formerly knwon as DMD (Daemon managing Daemons), it uses daemons to initialize and run services.
  • Nix package manager that allows different versions of a same applications, rolls back, sandboxes, applications per users.
It runs only Free Software so you need an hardware 100% compatible with FreeSoftware.

The pointlessness of the FSF endorsed distros based on Ubuntu...

A pure Free-Software distro is a very hard ambition as well as an hard goal to accomplish, you have to deal with your hardware and if your hardware is not compliance with the free Software it is almost impossible running a pure libre distro. But back to time when even installing a standard distro was an impossible task, Ubuntu came out helping a lot of people making easier installing linux on whatever hardware. However we have to flip the point of observation, at the beginning there were just free drivers mostly made through reverse engineering, most of them were too buggy or unreliables, and the few closed drivers were hard to obtain or unavailable to the end users. Hence running a linux distro and having a laptop or a PC with 100% hardware recognized was very hard to achieve but not for Ubuntu. Ubuntu made easy installing blob binaries on Linux and making your hardware properly working, cool! All of we are in debt with Canonical for this because Ubuntu broken this barrier and helped all the distro to achieve the same, pointing the direction to follow. The main point is Ubuntu used... show more

Carrying water for software owners is a compromise. Debian hosting non free software is a waste of resources that should go to making better free software. Allowing someone to set up a tent to install non free software outside of a FSF event, as long as the person dresses up as a devil, is not such a compromise, it's just another way of telling people that non free software gives an evil third party control of your computer. I think that Debian did a better job of shielding users from non free software than Ubuntu did, but they can do better still by dropping it all on the floor.

#specialpleading #splittinghairs

of course it is a compromise. it is just an acceptable compromise. but it is a compromise. if it werent, then “as long as the person dresses up as a devil” would be irrelevant. the “deal” and the “compromise” are practically the same thing. “if you dress like this and stay out of the room, you can be part of our event whereas you werent before.” you might as well say that as long as you put a big warning on cigarettes, it isnt a compromise to allow them to be sold instead of banned. (im not against the move from the fsf, but its a very silly argument that it isnt a compromise.)
