"The Federation Fallacy"

This is an interesting article with some salient points. However, I think that the conclusion drawn isn't quite right. Comparing WIkipedia to social networks misses the boat a bit, and I'm not sure that the democratization around WIkipedia works well all of the time (ie: is the user-generated content good just because it wasn't voted out?).

I feel a bit the same way about the social networks end of thing - I don't know that a popularity contest is necessary for a successful social network. Perhaps some funding and a bit of structure could help with growth and management, but I don't think things have to be centralized to be successful or appropriate for the masses.

I think this article is naive about applying democracy to Internet. Democracy was enabled to give people the illusion that they are participating in the political life of their region/country. I left out city because a moderate political involvement is more likely to yield any change than at the other levels. Plus, it’s easier to change city than region/country, so giving the democratic illusion is only useful at large scales that people can’t easily escape.

But on the Internet, even large scale websites can be ruled with an ion fist without triggering large scale unrest, and similarly smaller scale websites don’t need multiple user committees for them to run smoothly.

In the end, even a Mastodon instance is unilaterally closed by its admins, I imagine its users will stay in the Fediverse, I have a hard time believing they would suddenly go back to Facebook if they were coming from it.

I have the feeling that the author got really caught up upon learning that Mastodon had 50% of it's users across 3 instances and wrote an article around it. I see a pretty big contradiction when she states "...something promising true digital freedom for everyone." just prior to suggesting that freedom comes from centralization and people voting on the rules.

I don't know that I would agree that method has more freedom than anyone being able to run their own instance, or moving an account to a more specialized instance, or to an instance with a different set of rules, etc.

I think the good points come from suggesting that a portion of the Fediverse could stand to have some helpful funding and possible direction from a centralized organization - in that I'm sure at some point in the future some nodes/instances/pods may well need legal assistance or things like that.

Hey all!

If you're still wondering about places to go to replace G+, I wanted to suggest coming over to a Friendica system, which is in the Fediverse (it includes several different social platforms).

I've got a node here: https://social.isurf.ca

Drop me a line if you have any questions. Otherwise, hope to see you there!

And I am apparently pulling my G+ posts! lol...

Ah well...

Shared it for effect. :-)

"Hey kid, want some fries to go with all that freedom?"

Failure on so many levels. So sad.

Chat / XMPP support and testing

@iSurf Support

Hi all,

I'm not sure if you know or not, but Friendica has a built-in chat option that we pretty much have to leave disabled, as it has some bugs that conflict with the two most common & usable themes. It also relies on a javascript chat app that is no longer developed.

That said, we do have an integrated chat system on the iSurf Social platform, which you can use with either a standard XMPP client (such as Pidgin, gajim, or Conversations for Android or Xabber for Android - there's IOS apps too), or if you'd like to test/try out a web-based chat client here, which I'm going to have some discussion with the developers on replacing the old unsupported client with, please give chat.social.isurf.ca a try. It's a rediculously simple setup, nothing fancy. You use your social.isurf.ca username & password to login in to it.

If you would like any further information on how to use any of the other clients I mentioned, please let me know!

I should follow up quickly on this... I did mis-speak in my original post as I was confusing one chat addon with another. Friendica's 'XMPP' addon uses an old version of converse, while there is another XMPP chat addon that uses jappix mini.

I have been toying with updating the converse code, and it looks like recent versions of converse have some pretty ugly UI bugs in them - at least with the browsers I'm testing with. I'm going to go back a few releases for testing today, see if I can't get a usable solution in place for the addon.

Pluspora also operates an XMPP server.

Good for Mr. Assman!

Good for this guy. I'll leave my comments just at that.

Didn't Dave Letterman have this guy's Dad (?) on his show all the time? I think his name was Dick Assman and he was from the Canadian prairies. Gotta be the same family.

haha! He's got his own Wikipedia page, and it mentions Dave.

#assmanpower ?

Lol. I did not know that!!

What will I be doing today / weird winter

We're having an "El Nino" winter this year, which generally means pretty mild and dry. It's been a bit like a handful of springs so far, with very little precipitation from November on, but we've had some snow, some melting (and therefore mud/goop and dirty vehicles, etc), some snow, some melting. Today is apparently one of our snow days, so getting white again (and why did my back start pre-emptively aching? It's too cool to be heavy today...). At least it looks nice before the sanding/gravelling/dirtying of the road begins.

Been a very busy few weeks, hence a lack of posting!

So the past few weeks have been a little crazy. It got busy earlier in June with a road trip to do a test drive of a PHEV Outlander, which I did wind up purchasing, and has so far been absolutely stellar. For fun, here's a pic of it during it's first quick charge:

And with no partner around yesterday, I decided to take a drive out to a neighbouring community and use the quick charger there. Was a fantastic night for a drive:

Then beyond the new vehicle, it's been school wrap-up time for my boys, Field Day weekend with the local amateur radio club two weekends ago, my partner playing in a battle of the bands event last Thursday, then off on Friday afternoon for a fishing trip over our long weekend... Lots of extra prep in between for the two weekends as well.

It's been fun, hectic and tiring. Am enjoying a relatively quieter week to catch up on things and take a breath or two.

Sorry I missed your comment a few weeks ago. It's been a strange month here.

As a quick follow-up to this - I've been really very happy with the vehicle so far. It's been fantastic putting so many electric miles on around town. I've put a couple of thousand K's on it in the past month and t's highway abilities are great as well.

Happy Long Weekend, Canadians!

Here's wishing everyone a fantastic Victoria Day weekend!

I'm completely on my own this weekend, which gives me the opportunity to get some extra yard work done, and some work on a researching a business plan.

Maybe even some video game time too, woot!

If anyone wants to join me for a virtual #beer, cheers!

A quick post so I have at least a status!

Hi there. I'm a crazy Canuck who's been doing internet service engineering, support, management, consulting and whatnot for about 25 years. Linux system administration and networking have been a huge part of this adventure.

I'd been reading about these federated social network platforms for quite some time, but as I've never been much of a 'social network' type of person - at least not in the way that it's been used popularly, such as ogling over a celebrity, spreading false information faster than the old e-mail chains, or posting pictures of meals, I'd never found much motivation to tinker with these platforms. I decided recently to kind of 'check up' on what the state of these platforms were in, and wound up digging in. It's been a bit of an adventure, and I'm keen on the idea that we can all help make them better.

So, here we are, we've got Friendica going, and I'm hoping we have a long, fun and fruitful relationship!

Welcome to Diaspora!
