We've selected 12 payloads to fly to the Moon, as early as the end of this year — science and technology demos that will help pave the way for human exploration. Our partners from U.S. industry are developing lunar landers to get them to the surface. Details: https://go.nasa.gov/2TayKCB

After landing the Hoppers and the Mascot lander, it looks like Hayabusa-2 got a sample from asteroid Ryugu. To be returned to Earth.

Splendid job from JAXA. Congratulations!

Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked

@Douglas Senko I'd like to see someone try to take apart Voyager. ;)

Blockchains have their place but are certainly not perfect. Cryptography is an interesting subject which I don't think anyone can ever fully cover. Having had the opportunity to work with a number crypto algorithms and with some true experts in the field I learned a lot. I however know I barely scratched the surface.

From what I have seen looking at blockchains the most significant weaknesses lie in the smart contracts and and platforms that are built up around them. I don't expect any of the implementations to be truly perfect.

Cryptography has never been intended to protect things forever, only to make it very difficult and extremeley time consuming to defeat. Side channel attacks go after the implementations to leverage weaknesses not in the actual algorithms but rather the ways they run. These are often less time consuming and less effort to do, especially once you discover where and how information is leaked. These attacks tend to be very repeatable once discovered thus significantly reducing the time and effort needed for subsequent attacks on the same solu... show more

Thou canst not kill that which doth not live

But, saith Doom!, thou canst blow it into chunky kibble. Zombies, sure. Spectre vulnerabilities? Not so much.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/02/18/spectre_cant_be_killed/

The Register reports that security researchers at Google have concluded that Spectre-type attacks can never be completely prevented by software mitigations alone.

This doesn't come as a surprise. I would have thought it should have been evident from the very start, from the nature of the class of vulnerabilities.

I think my favorite vote rigging trick by the Repug's was having the Post Offices in heavily Dem areas of Florida, simply hold onto mail in ballots until they were postmarked too late and could not be counted.
Excellent bit of disenfranchisement.
Of course, no investigation or jail time.

Let's hope that changes.

Well, I've been playing around with my blog (mosqueeto.net) and got the WP => diaspora and WP => mastodon plugins working -- it's really pretty nifty.

I finally got around to opening up the blog for user registrations, and immediately got several from people I never heard of. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that...

But while thinking about it, it occurred to me that a wordpress blog would be a fine place for a g+ community to migrate to. WP themes exist that are sort of like g+. There can be lots of registered users, and users can have assigned roles: administrator, editor, author, contributor, and subscriber. These seem like a rough superset of the roles that exist in g+ communities. Free hosting is available at wordpress.com, and there are endless alternatives for paid hosting....
