(Resolved) Poor performance currently

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

The past couple of days there's been some odd performance problems. I've been working at it much of today and it looks like the VPS'es CPU performance has gone crappy. Benchmarks against a comparable VPS in another location showed this one performing really poorly.

So, I have a ticket open, I'm hoping the VPS can be moved to another host or something else comes along to fix it. I'm keeping my eye on it and am trying to keep things moving along smoothly.,

iSurf Support reshared this.

After contacting the VPS provider, the performance magically righted itself, and appears to have been much more reasonable since.

I'm sorry it took awhile to resolve - a performance problem from the host should really resolve in a much faster time frame.

Network link error

Hello all. I first mentioned the fact I was getting gateway errors when going to the main site link which is rendering the network link. For a brief period of time it was just ungodly slow (taking minutes to render) versus not working but for the past couple weeks it is back to being nothing but gateway errors. I posted a comment to the Friendica Matrix forum as well because I think it is a change to the code that is causing the problem not a configuration issue. The reason I say that is because it makes no sense to me that the flag over the network title should have 220,840 posts (attached). Also going to other places directly avoids trying to return the general posts query thus avoids whatever insane data build up it's doing. With the current state of things Friendica is basically unusable to me.

OK, the fix-up was released and has been applied, hopefully whatever caused that mess or just allowed it to create hugely long queries has been resolved.
I've disabled the ingestion of tweets from my Twitter timeline too. I think me tweeting over there should still post over here but that should be it.

Speed gains & fixes the past few days

!iSurf Support

Hey everyone,

After a few days of performance issues, worker queue backlog, and a number of database structure updates, it appears the system is running better again, and there shouldn't be delays on message delivery going on again.

If you see any bugs, please shoot them my way as quickly as possible so we can look at getting them resolved. Here's hoping we can get further gains through to the next stable release in March!

Maintenance to start in a few minutes

!iSurf Support

Howdy all,

About to start the next maintenance which will tie the DB up for awhile.

Planning maintenance tomorrow morning

!iSurf Support

It looks like the memory exhaustion issue has been resolved.

Now there's some other performance improvements in the past few days updates that require a bit of an outage for them to be implemented (more db restructuring).

I will likely run these updates tomorrow, Sunday morning pacific time.

May have fixed a big source of the problem

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

I believe I've found a source of problems and have corrected it. Hopefully we no longer see the service drop outs.

iSurf Support reshared this.

So far, so good. There's some interesting DB updates (Michael Vogel has been working on fixing up the DB structure for several revisions) coming down the pipe very soon that should help further with performance, but I'm going to let the system run status-quo for the moment until I'm sure the stability problems are gone.

Still seeing issues

!iSurf Support

There's still something very strange going on. Everything seems fine, then RAM usage spikes and the DB service claims 'out of memory'.

I'll be rebooting to bring in a new kernel in a few minutes. More fixes may be forthcoming, but they'll all entail outages here and there.

Unfortunately the DB crash caused multiple hours of downtime last night, and I'll try and find some way of improving that.

Stability issues this past week

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

This past week there's been some RAM starvation issues that seem to mostly have come out of nowhere. I've been investigating and trying to make very minor adjustments. Unfortunately, when they pop up, they crash the DB and things are down for awhile.

I've involved the VPS provider as well, but nothing much of interest has been found yet. I'll update further when I know more.

Follow the iSurf Announcements feed!

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

Quick note that I have recently created an iSurf Announcements account off-site, so that you can follow and hopefully get timely updates about what's going on, especially if there's any sort of outage here.

The account is: https://mycrowd.ca/isurfannounce

Thanks.

Extra contact points

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

I've created an account on my Pleroma instance as an outside contact + announcements point. If you'd like to connect to it, it's https://mycrowd.ca/isurfannounce

I have a personal account there too at https://mycrowd.ca/kinetix

!iSurf Support Hey sorry to bother again but I think outgoing federation is having problems. It's been like this for at least a week, maybe longer. Checking my account from the diasp.org D* pod my posts are 5 days behind. On the mastodon.technology they look like they are 3 days behind. Not sure if the workers are backlogged or if there is a bigger problem with Friendica's federation code but just giving you a heads up.

Not at all! I'm sorry we all had the inconvenience, but I'm glad it's back in seemingly decent order. Appreciate the patience!
I appreciate your unsung efforts to keep it running.

We've updated to the 2012 release candidate code

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

Right at the moment the system's under somewhat heavy load as things start to catch up after being in maintenance mode for the past couple of hours.

However, we're now on the current Release Candidate Friendica software, and hopefully we see the performance and stability improvements with it.

If you notice anything wacky going on, please let me know, and we'll get the investigations going!

Thanks, and enjoy!

What nodes/instances are shown in the "global community"?

!iSurf Support
Hello. is there a list of what nodes/instances are included in the "global community" when I access it here on iSurf? I notice that I see posts from the Diaspora server @pluspora.com. I have an account with @diasp.org, though I haven't seen posts from there reflected here.

I guess I'm just wondering how the interaction with outside Diaspora networks works within iSurf.

iSurf Social Registrations open again!

Hi all!

Well, with some of the bugfixes and improvements that have gone in with system cleanup and performance, I've been able to re-enable some cleanup settings. That, in turn, has led me to re-open registrations for new accounts here.

If you know of anyone who's been looking to give a North American Friendica setup a go, do let them know!

Expect an outage this weekend

!iSurf Support

Hi all!

Going to move the site over to another server this weekend. When the outage/shift will occur, I'm not sure - maybe as soon as tonight. If it doesn't occur this evening (pacific time), then it should tomorrow evening.

We should get some performance gains from the move.

I'll post with another status update soon, and when relevant!

Upgraded our instance to 2020.07 this evening!

!iSurf Support
Howdy everyone!

Just a quick note that we're now running Friendica 2020.07, the current stable release, after an upgrade this evening.

Please let me know if you notice any strange behaviour!

Thanks!

!iSurf Support
So I was under the impression that if you had to port your account, none of your old posts went with you because I ported my key over from an instance that I don't think provided that option a year ago. Just downloaded my backup and looked through the code and it looks like all my posts are saved. Is this the case because if so I've been telling people wrong things. It just doesn't download your saved files and videos yes? Also is this process still in experimental or has it moved beyond to just standard now?

!iSurf Support
Hey Guys,
Is it possible to put the language filter in? I have to use mastodon to find new people to follow because going to global is just full of people posting in languages I can't read. Which is great but useless to me. Thanks!
Lol I mispelled your email "Been talking to Hypolite Petovan about nomadic identity something hubzilla has for in case a person's instance collapses(example personal tragedy), you will have a backup running in the background of everything you post through mirroring on another instance. He thinks there is a roundabout way of doing this that I'd like to try out and see if there is a way to ensure one's history is always safe someone.
The only way for friendica account to mirror another friendica account is " Your admin must have enabled remote_self in the site settings." Is it possible you can do that? I'm sure the site software has so many options its hard to know what half of them do. Thanks, and thanks again for the language filter, its got some bugs, but better than not having it!
anubis2814"
Nm turns out they fixed the problem I was trying to find a solution to two upgrades ago. lol

Contributing to iSurf upkeep?

!iSurf Support iven registration is temporarily closed, and we now prune networked posts to reduce storage need -- is it perhaps time to start accepting financial contributions from users?

I'd be happy to chip in several dollars a month - OpenCollective seems like a good way to accept payment. Of course I just realized I don't know what the entity is behind iSurf, so I don't know how practical this is.

Thanks in advance for providing this service and being amazingly up-to-date and responsive!

Email delivery might be a hair better?

!iSurf Support

Sounds convincing, doesn't it?

Over the past few days I found some evidence that suggested that I had more work to do in DNS in relation to mail being delivered more reliably, and more with DKIM as well. Basically it hadn't been very clear that subdomains were being treated as separate entities from the main domain (though in all documentation I trip across, there seems to be no distinction between hosts/subdomains and domains) on some of the checks that mail services do. While I've had reporting from other systems coming in for months, random sampling of the reports hadn't produced the information that I recently saw.

I am hoping the net result at the moment is that far fewer mails wind up in various services (Gmail / Outlook/Hotmail, etc.) "Junk" folder.

Time will tell, and I look forward to any reports anyone has on mails being delivered from social.isurf.ca

Updated to 2020.03 stable

!iSurf Support

After numerous bugfixes & improvements, and doing what we could through the release candidate cycle, I'm happy to report we're now running on the latest Friendica stable release, 2020.03!

Enjoy the improvements, and thanks to everyone who pipes up when they notice an issue.

Time for an update to the latest Release Candidate!

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

As I'm quite interested in many of the bugfixes involved in the latest set of Friendica updates, I'm about to switch us to the release candidate.

There may be new bugs introduced, so if you notice anything untoward, please let me know!

Routing issue affecting iSurf Social past 36 hours or so

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

I didn't notice this until this morning, but there's been a partial outage at our hosting provider (them and others) for about a day and a half. Apparently an IRR messed up and some subnets disappeared to some places, and we're sitting on one of those affected subnets.

If you've been unable to reach the site for a day or two, this would be why.

It's also affecting the mail delivery out from here, so if you have received some emails that are very late, this would likely be why as well.

This is one of those fun situations that unfortunately just takes time to resolve once someone has fixed it up, and apparently it was fixed earlier today.
I am still unable to reach the page... 🙁

New cleanup settings underway

Closing new registrations on iSurf Social for now

!iSurf Support

Hi all,

I've been noticing some interesting performance issues here on iSurf Social, so I'm shutting down new registrations for the time being until I can figure things out a bit.

If you know of someone who you'd like to recommend or allow in as a user here, don't hesitate to let me know, as I'm open to that. Closing the registrations is just to control the accessibility to the general masses for the time being.

Thanks!
